CONTINUED

Just at the moment when my self confidence was at it’s peak did it come crashing down as 2 officers approached my booth at the Street fair saying I was under arrest.  I asked the officers if this could be done away from the crowd so I wouldn’t be totally humiliated and at least they obliged. As my hands were placed behind my back and a pair of hand cuffs strapped to my wrist I knew I was in the ride that would change my life.  I can’t totally recall whether Tom Steven’s was in the front seat but I remember seeing his face somewhere that day burned in my soul.  When I arrived at the precinct I was put in a holding cell not knowing what the hell was going on and not knowing where I could turn.

Then I found out what I was accused of and discovered the true nature of evil. Any investigator with an ounce of technical skills would see that 130 lb 5’6 frame could not overpower a 6 foot frame 250lb person with a simple a knife and perpetrate the despicable act that Steven’s said occurred but he was a “lawyer” and I was Joe Jew.  Don’t get me wrong Mr. Steven’s probably worked diligently to provide them with the evidence of the crime even producing a knife with my initials on. Another completely stupid action of the investigators if I was to commit such a vile act would I bring a knife with my initials on it to perpetrate it and then leave it there. There were more holes in this case then any slice of Swiss Cheese but that didn’t matter to the police because at least they were closer to their quota for the month.   The investigators drilled me about “the supposed crime” but couldn’t find anything because there was absolutely nothing to be found . Yet it was time for me to go through the system.

A system that would leave me with scars that continue 30 years later.

You might ask why I don’t mention the accused crime and the reason is simple we give to much publicity to those who commit evil then those who are the victim of such evil. If anything comes out of this writing I hope it opens the door that many are accused and many are truly innocent.

It was the night before I was to become President of the NY Young Republicans that sent me on a spiral that would change my live forever. That night an emergency meeting was called by the President still in charge Andrew Smallacombe and my soon to be V.P. Grant Esposito among those in attendants.  At that meeting actual cases of sexual misconduct by Tom Steven’s were brought up with one or more of the “victims” speaking about their abuse. It became apparent that we had no choice on the day I was to be sworn in as President, Tom Stevens would be removed as Nominating Committee Chairman. We understood that Tom Steven’s reaction to this move would be difficult to take but know one could have anticipated it would be this sick and devastating.

On the presiding day Tom Steven’s reaction to the move by the board was a visceral as anyone could imagine. He condemned the entire board and tried every “Robert’s Rule Of Order” to take control eventually he was thrown out leaving even the bravest among us wondering if there was a different way. Yet as time moved on and he formed his own club it appeared that we might just co-exist in peace but Steven’s was planning and plotting a move that even Machiavelli couldn’t have dreamed of.

I was living in an apartment with my brother and in those days many centuries ago or so it seemed we didn’t have cell phones. So when you received a message on something called a voice messager you had actually had to play it to hear it. If someone didn’t fully listen to it or accidentally deleted it well then it couldn’t be retrieved.  I believe I might have received such a message from a police officer but to this day am not entirely sure.  If I received this message could the past have been blown away I’m not sure all I can say is it was weird how certain people with legal names are listened to more intently then the rest of us.

As President of the NY Young Republican Club I tried to keep an active and public front to expand our group little did I realize that this might have added salt into Steven’s wound up being kicked out and to seek retribution beyond sanity.  It was a beautiful day in NYC and we had our booth at a local street fair. I was feeling a sense of pride in how the group was going and even gave a speech in the public square which would become much smaller in only a few hours. My mind drifted to political aspirations such as running for Mayor but would I have to trade my Pro Life position to get there maybe it was the step I would take. Instead in just moments I would be taking a whole different path that would lead  my life to the spiral but once I stepped down how far would I go before I again saw light.

The distraction from personality instead of cause left me with a bitter  taste that made me decide to drop out of the political world until Amy Carter pulled me back in. I had transferred from SUNY Albany to Bryant University and the last thing on my mind was politics well at least openly.  My liberal professor decided to invite Amy Carter to our school to speak about the Freedom Fighters in Nicaragua which she called U.S. puppets which led to an active and divisive debate on this issue and the U.S role in Latin America. No sooner had this debate ended that I had to step in it again as I formed and became President of Bryant University Young Republican Club as well as start my own Conservative Column in the school newspaper .In a school full of apathy even my liberal professor was enthralled with this political activism of a handful of students.

This also led to an Omen that if I had listened might have ended this story here as I received my first death threat due to a controversial column that I had written. The police were notified but like so many other times in the future and past were not concerned with following up.  It ended up being a non story but something I probably should have kept on part of my front page instead of moved to the obituaries.

My political skills at Bryant were rapidly expanding. I was part of a team of 3 that were debate the world famous Oxford Union of similar size. These accomplishments were duly noted by the state of Rhode Island who recognized this accomplishment. It appeared that I would set aside these awards and start working on building my wallet instead as graduation loomed but faith and Tom Steven’s would pull me back into the belly of the beast.

Tom Steven’s again asked me to become part of the NY  Young Republican Club where he was now in charge of the “nominating committee”. This committee was made up of one and was truly the power broker for this organization that was a couple of handfuls strong. I was slowly being groomed for the Presidency of this club as Tom Steven’s believed I would be his puppet.  In know time I was V.P. presiding over many political events in NYC and even attending top Presidential fund raising events where tickets didn’t sell out. By the way never pay for the food for these events McDonald’s is a whole lot less expensive and taste much better.  Rumors of Mr. Steven’s abuse kept coming my way but I generally dismissed them as if I worked for the police department (see previous paragraph).
