Warning!!! Too many choices can get you bored.

bored with tv

I know that I’m dating myself but when I was a kid we didn’t have as many choices on TV and I think we were less bored then the children of today. We had three basic channels and UHF channel if your television antenna was just right.  You would wait all week for your favorite T.V show to go on and watch it as a family or at least with your brother or sister. Every week you waited with anticipation for the next episode. It was the time when the movie of the week was truly the movie of the week.  Yes we had less selection but I believe this led to more anticipation and as such more excitement when a show came on.

Today if you don’t like the first two minutes of a show you can switch it to over a hundred different choices. If you don’t have time to watch a show one night you can watch it on your computer or DVR it for the next night. Yes there are big shows that “everyone is watching” but if you miss it today you can watch it tomorrow.  Don’t get me wrong I’m glad technology has taken us to this level but sometimes I wonder if these choices are truly more enjoyable then the ones we had in the past.

Book Vs Movie

book vs movie 2 book vs movie

I have yet to see a movie that is able to capture all the details that a book can deliver yet on the other hand I have never read a book that is able to capture the action that a movie can deliver. One example of this is “The Hunger Games”.  The books description of the murder of these children was so graphic that it deeply moved the reader while the movie showed these deaths in an almost cartoon way. I believe the producer  felt this needed to be done to achieve the PG13 label.   It also is hard to deliver a book into a movie form because the reader has their own concept of what the characters and scenario should look like that can’t be exactly duplicated in a film.  In conclusion if you’re looking for action go to the movies but if you’re looking for depth read the book.

Leader and critic

     Leader critic

There are two basic people in life the “leader and the critic”. The leader takes a chance to make things happen while the critic analyzes their every move.  Leaders are essential in seeing that change occurs while critics insure that this change actually works. Yet if the critic becomes filled with envy, hate or fear of the leader, then their opinions can lose their validity. It is therefore essential that we look at the criticisms based on the actual facts behind the criticism not of our opinion of the leader. This will insure that society improves no matter who is truly in charge.

My personal faith

jewish prayer 2

My faith is based on the Torah (Old Testament for my Christian brothers & Sisters) but because it can be difficult to fully understand those writings then I might look to the Talmud and/or Rabbi for greater knowledge of a concept. The Talmud is interruptions and court rulings made by great wise man who wrote about the meaning behind those words.  For example in the holy book it says you can not work on the Sabbath but what truly is work? Although the writers in the Talmud are incredible learned men they are still men and to me that means they can make an error and/or interrupt a ruling based on a certain time period only. Therefore I follow the rulings that make sense in my life yet understanding and respecting others that might follow a more stricter interpretation.  I also  acknowledge that they may be right and I could be wrong with my interpretation.  I believe that as long as a person tries their best to follow G-D’s laws in their personal life then the merciful one will not only accept those individuals but love and appreciate all their efforts.

Turning Japanese, Chinese, Southern …..

Confused

Everyday I speak to someone with a different accent even if it’s for a few minutes a start to pick up their accident subconsciously. I feel those on the other side might think that I’m making fun of them but I truly can’t help myself. I guess there is upside to this dilemma if all of sudden I’m suddenly given the role as a Chinese, Southern man I’ll just hang on the phone with my friends down South and East for a bit longer.

Party Problems

bored at party

I love a good party but hate figuring out who to speak too.  The bigger the party the harder this problem becomes. There are people you’re supposed to speak to like family and friends but then there are the people who you may never speak to again. How do you maneuver away from the “People you’re supposed to speak (PYSP) to” to the ones you really want (RW) to without hurting anyone’s feelings. Here are a few techniques that might be helpfu

(1) Bathroom break- Tell your friends you have to go to the bathroom just wash your hands and then sneak back to the people you want to speak to.

(2) Drink Break- Tell them you’re going to get a drink and be right problem then sneak over to the (RW’s). Problem is they have to be in the way to the drink location and they might want to join you.

(3) Tell the Truth- It could hurt your (PYSP) feelings but with a little tact it just work. For example don’t go out and say “I’d love to speak to you but you’re really boring today”.

Dogs why do I love thee!

Muttpuppy

Don’t worry this isn’t a zoophilia post.  It just fascinating why a Capitalist like myself is in love with such a lazy creature that costs me so much more then they can produce (unless they have some acting talent). I believe it is because of the intangible assets that they bring to the table. These gifts (below) can’t be measure in dollars.

Please add your own reasons.

(1) Humor- Dogs behavior can be hysterical and there jokes(actions) never become old.

(2) Playfulness-  While children get older and no longer play those childhood games dogs are always into a game of catch or running around the house.

(3) Sincerity- Dogs always appear naked to the world literally (sometimes though you can get them a cool outfit)  and figuratively.

(4) Simplicity- It doesn’t take much for a dog to be happy just a piece of chicken will do

(5) Dress Up- They look great in all different wardrobe combinations.

(6) Loyalty- While others might find your activities less then exciting a dog will sit by watching you as if ever word you wrote was golden.

(7) Unconditional Love- You don’t have to worry about apologizing to your dog or buying he/she a gift to regain their love when you screw up.

Ask first!

wow

I’ve never been the type of person that would try to make plans in the last minute and  also felt insecure asking for help, that was until last night. Last night I noticed that my son got a call from a young lady asking him to go to a movie, that was to begin in an hour. In an hour? Forget the thought of a woman calling to ask a man out that was strange enough but what truly was bizarre is that she asked at the last minute.  How many Saturday’s nights did I stay alone in my house as a teen all because I was intimidated that it would look desperate if I called a friend in the last minute. I’d rather suffer the loneliness then feel I was desperate. Wow what a waste of time.

This young lady has inspired me to not only be less intimidated to ask people out for a social engagement but also ask people to get involved as well. I realize  insecurities can make us afraid to engage others and then we suffer as whole. I for one am going to make a greater effort to fight these feelings so that I can not only truly enjoy the company of others but insure that we as as group can exceed the expectations others have of us.

I’m not straight… when it comes to art.

I realize that my desire in art doesn’t go down a straight narrow path but are quite broad.  This is not just found in “standard art forms ” like music, movies but even food and hair styles.  It drives me crazy when I go to the barbershop and ask them to be creative yet it results in the same boring haircut.  Many a food critic will love a good plain steak but if you want my applause you better throw on those herbs and spices.   I love a wide variety of music from country to hard core rock to even the Chairman. Music and movies that follow a formula are predictable and boring therefore many independent films have a special place in my heart.

On the other hand it’s annoying to be shocking for just shock purposes or in other words to be miley.  Those that have unique eclectic talent don’t have to be shocking to sell their talents they just have to be themselves. Life is full of various colors that I want taste, see and hear in my lifetime.

the third wheel

Have you ever felt locked out of conversation? It feels frustrating when your friends are talking and you have nothing to say? It can also feel pretty lonely when you are put in such a situation. How would you deal with it? Here’s a few suggestions below. It would be great to have you interject your own points or comments as well.

Solution                                 Advantage                            Disadvantage

(1) Sneeze                                  Gets people’s attention         People get disgusted after awhile

(2) Bathroom Break               Gives you a break to think    Bathrooms aren’t great topics

(3)Hello, I’m here!                 They will listen                        May make you appear insane

(4) Listen                                 Can learn new facts                Can learn some boring facts

(5) Interject w word from conversation / Can get you in /  You really have to listen
