My faith is based on the Torah (Old Testament for my Christian brothers & Sisters) but because it can be difficult to fully understand those writings then I might look to the Talmud and/or Rabbi for greater knowledge of a concept. The Talmud is interruptions and court rulings made by great wise man who wrote about the meaning behind those words. For example in the holy book it says you can not work on the Sabbath but what truly is work? Although the writers in the Talmud are incredible learned men they are still men and to me that means they can make an error and/or interrupt a ruling based on a certain time period only. Therefore I follow the rulings that make sense in my life yet understanding and respecting others that might follow a more stricter interpretation. I also acknowledge that they may be right and I could be wrong with my interpretation. I believe that as long as a person tries their best to follow G-D’s laws in their personal life then the merciful one will not only accept those individuals but love and appreciate all their efforts.
Reincarnations an interesting link
What do you believe? Please share your thoughts.
Have you met someone who appears to be attached to an era long ago. For example someone who is drawn to events linked to the”Medieval Times” or someone who loves early forms of music but can’t identify with todays music? Is there a time in history that truly hits your emotional as if you were truly their? I believe that these might be traces of your previous existence. The love that you have for these previous periods could come from the soul that never dies and only moves to a different time period.
I love my Christian Brothers & Sisters
As an observant Jewish man I want to state unequivocally that I love my Christian brothers and sisters for some reasons that most Jews would agree with me on (1) and for other reasons that many Jews would disagree with me on (definitely 5) . Here are a just a few reasons (see below)
(1) Support of Israel. Christians have been some of the most vocal and financial supporters of Israel.
(2) Open support for strong moral values. Christians have not been afraid to stand up for the traditional values (that I hold dear) in the public square, even when faced with ridicule or harassment.
(3) Charity- Christians have started and support some of the most successful charities in helping those in need.
(4) Great Entertainment- From X-Mas Songs to “It’s A Wonderful Life”. Come on you have to admit they touch at your heartstrings.
(5) Trying to convert me- Although I love my faith and believe it is the true path I still appreciate those willing to try “save me” because they love me and feel that their path will bring me the truth. In other words I don’t agree with the message but love the messenger for still caring.
The beginning is key
The Agnostic will try to separate faith from their source (the Bible/Torah) especially the first verse. “In the beginning of G-D’s creating the heaven and the earth… If they can ignore this section and say that instead the pieces were here and that G-D just assembled then then they could conclude that everything can exist without the will off G-D, Therefore they would conclude that we aren’t depending on G-D.
That is why the 1st words of the Bible/Torah are the 1st words because they are essential to our faith in one G-D. A G-D who loves each one of his creations and plays an important role in our lives everyday. It becomes easier to see that when one reads the holy book and open their heart, minds and soul to the beauty within the book.
Hate the sin love the sinnner – in real terms
Approximately 25 years ago I was falsely accused of a serious crime. The charges were so outlandish that they were dropped before they even went to a Grand Jury. Yet the pain I bared during this difficult time left me with one emotion, hate. From the moment the false charges were brought till several months after they were dropped my mind was consumed with hate for this individual and how I would seek revenge. I suddenly realized that this hate consumed me and hurt my relationship with my family and friends. I decided to make a truce, I would hate what this individual did to me but would not hate this individual. Instead I actually felt sorry for him. I felt sorry that this grown man had acted in such despicable manner over something so trivial. What a poor life he must have been living to act such a way.
This was a lesson that changed my life. Many of my friends who share similar or even opposing political views hate the leaders from the other side. I believe that hate makes it difficult for them to see how others might perceive a situation and therefore be unable to argue forcefully from their point of view. If instead we could see our political opponent as a good person, who just sees the world from a different perspective, we would have a better chance to convince his/her supporters of the logic we carry. In return we might be able to change policy that effects us all.
It becomes more difficult to love those that have personally wronged us but still hate what they’ve done. It sometimes feels like we are acting in a bipolar way to this individual. Yet to truly hate such an individual not only causes them pain but ourselves and more importantly those that are caught in the middle.
I believe though that there are times when hate is not only important but necessary. If a solider is called into battle he must hate those he is fighting against but when the battle is ended he must some how put that hate in a box, till the next battle. In fun we can hate the rival sports teams but of course not to the point where we wish permanent injury to those players.
Hate is therefore an emotion that must be utilized only in extreme circumstances. Where one is defending not only themselves, family, friends but also in defense of the values they hold dear. This can occur with defending ones nation from attack or defending their place of worship from similar forces. Therefore hate should be used when all attempts of love have been defeated and only for that time it is needed.
Have you heard this (below)
I would appreciate it if anybody has additional information concerning this “discovery” because it would be one of the greatest discoveries every or is the “discovery” the biggest hoax every?
Have the
Ten Commandments
Been Found?
It’s almost too stunning to ponder!
Has one of the two sets of the Ten Commandments, hewn by Moses and “engraved with the finger of God”, been found?
Several weeks after their legendary Exodus from Egypt, according to the biblical account, the Israelite nation was gathered to Mount Sinai to hear God’s eternal covenant with them – the Ten Commandments.
Moses was also called up the mountain to receive the Ten Commandments on stone tablets. When Moses descended, he broke them at the foot of the mountain. Later he received a replacement set to go inside the Ark of the Covenant.
What happened to the Ten Commandments of Moses – the first set?
We may wonder what happened to that first – the broken – set of tablets/
The June 17, 1992 issue of the Shanghai “Liberation Daily” (Chinese official party organ) published a news item, entitled, “A ‘Myth’ from the Gulf war”. “The Sun”, a United states newspaper, also published a report on it. The two sources contained points that differed, but they generally agreed on the essential points. That two separate articles, with differing details, would appear on two separate continents, was regarded by some as significant.
They both indicated that those first two inscribed tablets had been found.
During the Gulf war, heavy allied bombing of southern Iraq “caused a cavern about 100 feet deep to cave in,” explained Kurt Jenkins, a British archaeologist and one of the first called to the scene. He and his colleagues found a variety of items in the cavern, including, incredibly, the original tablets containing the Ten Commandments.
“We just put everything on planes and flew them out of the country because we knew the Iraqis would not allow us to properly excavate the site,” Jenkins said. The site was close to the Euphrates River, about 80 miles north of the Kuwaiti border.
Why would the Ten Commandments be found in Iraq?
Historically, there would be a good possibility that the broken set of the tablets was later recovered from the lower slopes of Mount Sinai by a faithful Israelite and taken to the promised land of Canaan (Israel). Later, when the Jews were carried captive to Babylon (now in Iraq) in 606, 597 and 586 BC), the broken set of tablets could well have been taken by someone, in the hope of preserving them for posterity. By the time when the captivity was drawing to a close, the Jews had been so successful in business in Babylonia that their children and grandchildren, now so worldly-minded, few of them were interested in returning to the desolated home of their forefathers. Only a remnant returned. Overlooked, it was NOT later brought back to Judea. Forgotten, it was ignored. When the town was flooded, a new village was built atop the old one. This went on for 2,500 years, until recently. (Jews lived in these riverside towns as well as in Babylon city.) This rebuilding as well as the continual river deposition would account for it now being so far under the surface.
According to the Chinese report, it was personnel in the Western forces who recognised the tablets for what they were.
Ten Commandments of Moses taken to U.S. “for analysis”?
The “Sun” article reported that exciting as the discovery was, scientists were stunned by the way the words were inscribed on the tablets. “Although worn by centuries of erosion,” said Jacob Arens, a physicist from the University of Jerusalem, “the letters are clean with sharp edges. No stonecutter could have done such a perfect job.”
Arens and other scientists from Europe and the United States subjected the tablets to a variety of tests, including x-rays and computer analyses. “The letters were definitely burned into the rock,” said Professor Ludwig Sales from Berlin university. “I’m not ready to say it was a laser beam, but some sort of cutting ray was used – something far beyond the skills of ancient Hebrews” (runaway slaves in the desert).
Vance Ferrell reported from the U.S. that a friend rang John Hopkins University sources and the people there “appeared stunned that someone would have that information. Throughout the conversation, it was obvious that a secret needed to be kept, and they were surprised that the cat was out of the bag. At one point in the conversation, I asked, ‘Do you have information on this?’ The answer was something like this: ‘Well, we have information.’ I replied, ‘Something in the affirmative or in the negative?’ ‘Something in the affirmative,’ came the response.”
How big were the Tablets of The Ten Commandments?
According to “Encyclopedia Judaica”, they weighed 40 se’ah (selah) which equalled 913 grams, that is about 2 pounds. This means they were quite small. The biblical record states that when Moses brought them down the mountain, “the two tables of the testimony were in his hand [singular]: the tables were written on both their sides; on the one side and on the other were they written.” (Exodus 32:15,16)
Notice, according to the record he held them BOTH in his one hand; and they were engraved front and back. That clears up two popular misconceptions. (Artists often portray them as large, with one carried on each arm, and everything written on the front side only.)
The essence of a simple structure
If by some reason you see a simple little structure in the back of a friend or neighbors house during this time of the year they are probably celebrating Sukkah (or have been kicked out by their wife). If my presumption is right (not about being kicked out) then this family will be celebrating a traditional holiday commanded by the bible to build these types of structures and dwell in them. These were the same types of structures that our ancestors built when we left Egypt and dwelled in the desert. But why would G-D command the Jewish people us to build such a structure the rabbi shared with me two beautiful reasons.
(1) We must realize that in order to be blessed by G-D that we have to play an active role in that blessing. Or in other words G-D helps those who help themselves and accept G-D’s role in every blessing. The Sukkah structure that we build is not very sturdy just like our everything we build it can be teared down and we must release G-D’s role in keeping it sturdy.
(2) In a world that has great technological advances the simple things are truly what matters. A Sukkah is a simple structure which allows us to enjoy the simple true joys of family and friendship.
Fragile like glass
Yesterday a storm knocked out my electricity but more importantly it knocked out my sense of security. This reminded me of the 10 days without electricity that me and many of my neighbors spent when Hurricane Sandy hit. At first it felt like a standard camping trip but later it showed how our technical society can be stopped in an instant.
As Yom Kippur (Day Of Atonement) begins tonight it also is a time of reflection. Jews around the world will fast to plead that G-D forgives us for our sins and allows us to be written in the book of life. I personally apologize to all those that have been hurt indirectly or directly by my actions and ask for your forgiveness.
I believe we should reflect during this 24 hour period that just like a glass in a hand everything that we achieved and have can be shattered in an instant. On Yom Kippur I thank G-D for all the moments not just for me but my friends, associates and all good peoples. I plead that G-D will forgive our sins and that we all get written in the book of life for another year of health, happiness and success.
