A real test for Free Speech

Posted by Bruce - in Blog, Philosophy, Uncategorized - No Comments

I have always been a strong proponent of free speech but sometimes it becomes extremely difficult.  When a person tries to rewrite an evil history in order to provoke an ugly response is that speech that should be protected (see below)? Though his words are repulsive he must have the freedom to speak. The only answer for bad speech is good speech based on logic and clarity that negates the hate.  If we try to silence the vile speech it will only come back in acts of hate and cruelty. As hard as it is we must allow all to speak their mind and counter with truth, honesty and love.

Hitting back

woman beating up man

Give it to Whoopi Goldberg to say what’s on her mind and not be afraid to challenge common norms (see attached). I’ve been taught never to hit a lady but when a lady refuses to act in such a way I believe as does Whoopi that you have the right and duty to defend yourself.  I’m not talking about taking a hit or two but there is no reason a man should be savagely attacked by anyone and not defend themselves.  Too many times “social norms” have stood in the face of common sense and many a time a woman is just as strong as a man especially with those stilettos and purse.  I will give up a seat for lady or open the door as such but be warned if anyone attempts to smack me around the labels will fade and I will defend for myself.  I suggest you do the same.  WHAT DO YOU THINK?

Everything is timed

looking at watch

IT’S SYMBOLIC OKAY

I have timed my entire life. Time consumes my life like nothing else. Logically I understand that I can’t live for ever so I want to insure every moment counts. Yet  I have to realize that some of the best moments are when I don’t look at my phone (watch has been gone years ago).  Whether it playing ball with my dogs, watching a movie, listening to music or just talking with friends these are the true moments I hold on to.  Yet the battle for time continues as I obsess over whether I’ve wasted you get it “time”.  If this isn’t bad enough I worry whether I’m wasting other people’s time.

The obsession with time is because I would like to accomplish a great deal in a short period and if I don’t accomplish those goals I feel like I’ve failed. Sabbath has enabled to break from this period a bit as I take a day to realize that as hard as I might work G-D is still in charge and my efforts would amount to nothing without Hash-m’s divine intervention.  Sabbath might help me realize that but I also like to help and since G-D has a longer watch then mine I’m probably going to still being rush along.

They got me.

brown vs white

CAN’T ALL EGGS GET ALONG

I’ve been a big fan of brown whether it be brown rice, brown sugar (it’s amazing I married a white woman)  so when brown eggs came out I assumed they were better then white eggs.  Now I find there isn’t any real nutritional difference (see link below).  Well at least they look prettier.

Guilty Pleasure

opie and anthony

I love listening to Opey and Anthony in the morning. I feel cleansed but still a bit dirty with this confession.  Yes they’re crude and rude but they can also be hysterically funny.  It’s also a safety issue because other shows can put me to sleep and that’s not a great option when you’re on the Palisades Pkwy or LIE.  My views and the shows views can be quite different and sometimes it can be so annoying that I have to switch the channel but if you don’t take it too seriously it’s mostly a lot of fun.  Their humor brings me in but their support of the 1st Amendment keeps me listening. They will defend any person who is attacked for saying something whether they be from the left, right or even off the wall.  So if you need a break from the mundane and aren’t afraid to laugh or be offended turn on to Opey and Anthony. I can guarantee you won’t fall asleep listening to those guys.

Your roots are here to stay.

roots

No matter how we might try to be different then our culture the roots are too deep to escape.  We might discover simple moments that signify these roots whether it be having the same humor as your parents or  even suddenly observing a faith ritual that you have tried to ignore.  We can grow like a tree and discover new worlds but those roots will hold us to a tradition and faith that will last longer then a leaf that will appear for a season.  Let us make sure that those roots help us flourish and are not the vines that have kept our culture or family down in the past.

A different take on Easter

Posted by Bruce - in Blog, Faith, Uncategorized - No Comments

I remember meeting my friends dad after his family experienced a tragedy. This gentlemen made a profound statement that even today holds true to my heart. He said “G-D wanted you to be a Jewish  so you should be a Jewish and G-D wanted  me to be a Christian so that is the path I’m taking.  This statement is truly relevant to my take on Easter and Christianity as a whole.

I believe G-D wants us all to believe in him but realizes that his message will be received differently from various people. Therefore G-D utilizes various messengers/prophets to reach all his children. Jesus was able to reach many people’s who were polytheistic and bring them to the a monotheistic faith.   When he died as a martyr it brought many people’s to the important values of sacrifice, forgiveness and true love.  Though we might differ on who Jesus was we can  be grateful for the values and faith his life has brought to billions of people.  HAPPY EASTER TO MY CHRISTIAN BROTHERS AND SISTERS.
