As we look for a new leader to run the free world it sometimes is helpful to reflect on leaders in the past to find the characteristics that last. Imagine if during one of these “heated arguments” one of the candidates plainly stated the other was right and he/she was wrong? That actually occurred in a publicly more then a few years back when Moses publicly rebuked Aaron for not taking an action but when he heard Aaron’s reason Moses publicly stated Aaron was right and he therefore was wrong. There was no excuse made just a simple statement that the other person was right and he was wrong. If that occurred in our public discourse today, with our leaders wouldn’t we all be better for it?
Sacrifice Today
In the biblical days people would offer sacrifices on the altar to G-D for all different reasons but today we have no such Temple to make such an offering or do we? The Temple might be destroyed but everyday (G-D willing) we are given bounty to eat so why can’t we leave a symbolic amount to the one who has given us this and the ability to enjoy it. That is why before I take a bite of my food I put a small piece aside for G-D and leave the last morsel to G-D . Sometimes I’ll sacrifice an item of food I love because I want to make an offering for a transgression I’ve committed. This is my own way of showing that I appreciate what G-D has given me and although there is no altar to bring it to at least I have not forgotten the desire to show my gratitude or ask for forgiveness.
Sanctuary for all
As it is written in the Bible/Torah various hands played vital roles in building G-D’s sanctuary today those hands are still needed. Bazalel might have been the leader of building the Tabernacle but key parts from all different peoples with different backgrounds, strengths and weaknesses were also utilized. If G-D utilized all different hands to build the holiest building at one if not the holiest sites in the world, shouldn’t we try to work together on the more mundane activities of our life today? Synagogues, Church’s and Mosque’s shouldn’t be in the business of pulling people away but bringing them in with all their different backgrounds because only when we utilize all the good parts that each individual brings will we truly be building the sanctuary we need today.
Group Mentality- Politics- Faith
As we listen to polls telling us who is hot in politics and art are we persuaded to follow or think on our own? I believe we should stop and think what is right before we follow as sheep to what could be our own cliff. This is the lesson we can derive from the biblical account of the building of the golden calf in which group think got people to do what they knew fairly close to the surface was wrong. That is also why 1 G-D believe is so important because sometimes you must rebel from the crowd to do what is right but even if you feel alone during such periods you can be assured that your creator is still on your side and that support is bigger/better then any crowd against you.
Peace = Faith
When someone has true faith they are not shackled with trying to conquer the world alone but realize they are in an eternal partnership with the one being who truly decides everything. For even the most detail plans can go adrift with a snow storm or even being unable to take in the breath of life. Therefore those of faith will try their best for a higher calling and leave it up to G-D to answer the line. People of faith live in peace with an understanding that as much as it’s up to them to act the result is up to G-D now and in the future.
Hair and free will
There has been a debate among those of faith whether our life is predetermined or we set our own path and the answer lies in our hair. For unlike an animals hair which doesn’t necessarily need to be groomed (although it looks much better) home sapiens/human’s needs to be for our own survival. We can’t walk around with our hair in our eye’s or we’d bang into everything and if you didn’t wash our hair eventually something else dangerous would grow in it. Yet hair on other parts of our body doesn’t need to be managed. The interesting fact about this is hair on our body isn’t necessarily seen but the hair on our head is visible at least initially (sorry bald people). Therefore we can see through the hair on our face (especially if it’s combed back) that G-D who created/creates everything wants us to determine our own path by the actions we take. G-D might have a path designed for our success but unless we move the distractions out of the way we will never see it.
Snow leave or go
The warnings are all over the place from man to stay inside for a snow storm is here but I’m considering a stronger voice. For today is Shabbat and I’ve become a regular attendee of those in the faith community who observe prayers together during this holy day yet maybe the snow is a different sign that I shouldn’t ignore. It’s ironic for those that are traditional wouldn’t accept driving in a car to get there but I can consider this part of the soulful journey. I guess I’m going to leave my hands in faith and try to get to Synagogue if for some reason it is closed or I don’t make it well at least I tried to listen to the stronger voice.
I could have been a…. Rabbi.
I read about a reasonable priced school that could turn a “Shlomo” into a Rabbi in only one year the only problem is it read from a different book. I would be able to park almost anywhere in NYC, lead many Mitzvah’s and most importantly help those who are caught between the traditional and the secular find their soul spot . For although everyone should be invited to attend certain actions aren’t acceptable in “The Book” but are not only acceptable but appear to be promoted in the school. I don’t believe any clergy person should turn away anyone who seeks salvation and we are all sinners looking to become better people yet if we make up our own rules based on political correctness then we aren’t a religious group but a political one. I could become a Rabbi through the more traditional way but that would take years and probably force me to follow rules that I believe are correct for many but not all. Therefore I guess I’ll have to park like the rest and will only speak as a layman as I try to help my fellow human find their soul spot.
Oh my Gosh…. PLEASE
Everyone has the right to express themselves the way they want and therefore I’m not trying to censure anyone but would appreciate if you just change the last 2 letters. The Bible says we shouldn’t take the name of G-D (see) in vain and although this isn’t the Hebrew word it still irks me when it is said as such. I actually say a little silent prayer on behalf of those that have said the one letter, just in case it irks G-D as well. “Oh my Gosh” may not appear to have the same effect for now but when it comes into larger use who knows where it will take us. Thank you for considering my request and I wish you all the great happiness that has you say “Oh my G0….sh!!!!” By the way “Thank G-D” is fine in my book and the book as well.
Faith/Politics/Parenting
The way you raise your children might have more to do with your faith and politics then you might believe. For those that belief that G-D controls every aspect of their life might belief that they in turn should control every aspect of their child’s life. While those who belief G-D gives us free will to live and learn will utilize that aspect when we raise our children. Then of course politics can come into play, whether it be those who are Pro-Gun and take their children to the rifle range, to those who are “Pro-Abortion” who take their children to the clinic. Here is the way (below) I believe that my prospective on the world has influenced the way I raise my children. Of course other aspects play a pivotal role, such as seeing what the Jones’s are doing to seeing how lazy you feel that particular day but don’t discount the role faith and politics play in the families of today.
(1) FAITH- Although my children aren’t as traditional as me I believe and pray that they have an enduring faith in G-D that will help them deal with failure and success.
(2) TEA PARTY- I’ve raised my children to enjoy the freedoms they are given with only some basic strict laws they can’t break.
(3) CONSERVATIVE- The values that I’ve raised them under should allow them to enjoy the freedom in number 2 without crossing the lines of good judgment and G-D willing I won’t be forced to add many new restrictions over time.
(4) LIBERAL- I have created a financial net that should keep them away from falling through and am probably a bit more lenient on passing judgement in their cases.
