The Martian 2 The Oscars 2016

And the Oscar’s goes to “The Martian” for ….. best sound mixing.  This is the obvious choice with the late David Bowie’s song playing in the background. Sorry it doesn’t deserve best film for it’s very predictable and the characters haven’t been drawn out enough. The  jokes are so bad that you would have thought they were written by a scientist (sorry scientists) .   It also feels as if  your in a Mad Science class that you didn’t study for, in which I would have definitely  failed. The depth of the script and action was better then I expected though with incredible visual effects probably another Oscar win.  I could also reasonable expect the film to win Best Cinematography and probably Matt Damon will win Best Actor.  In closing “The Martian” was better then I expected yet didn’t achieve the Oscar Gold.

*** 1/2 Stars for “The Martian”

Mad Max Fury Road & On Your Feet- Polar Opposites- OSCAR NOMINATION

Mad Max Fury Road    On Your Feet

‘Max Max Fury Road” & “On Your Feet” are polar opposites art forms not just for the stage they perform on but on their greatness and failures.  “Max Max Fury Road” is a full coarse action film with unbelievable sets, special effects, plenty of continuous action but little character development while “On Your Feet” deals with complex characters but lacks the other characteristics from ” Mad Max Fury Road”.  While “On Your Feet” and “Brooklyn” have much in common even though the stage is different “Mad Max Fury Road” goes down a totally different path.   Art can go in totally different directions yet those who appreciate talent can still appreciate those different end zones.

MAD MAX FURY ROAD ***  The sets, action, and special effects are spectacular but not enough to be deserving on an Oscar nomination which should consider character development as a key component. There might be a deeper meaning that I’m missing but with the fast pace of action it’s hard to absorb it.

Simple & Beautiful

Brooklyn Movie Poster

With all the big action movies sometimes a simple film done well can have just as big an impact, as any action movie, which is clearly demonstrated in the film “Brooklyn”.  If you want a story with ton’s of action and drama this would not be in your selection but if you want a film that is poignant and even poetic at times “Brooklyn” might be your stop. It has a certain class that crosses many continents.

*** If you want a film devoid of much conflict then add a 1/2 star more.

Star Wars- Unusual Review

Star Wars the Force Awakens

If you enjoy the franchise you’ll probably love this film but if you’re like me you probably could watch one of the Star War’s previous movies and get the same vibe.  It has your silly robots, great special effects, and all the action of the previous films.  The new characters are also quite appealing but it’s basically the same old story with a few little twists.  The action is exhilarating at points but it is in most good action movies.  I don’t have a clue why this film was given a PG-13 rating if anything it was less violent and graphic then other films in the series.  Basically the film is not made for people like me who aren’t the biggest Star War’s fans in the 1st place but those millions  who love this time of series so it’s unfair for me to pass the final verdict. Yet as a film-maker I will review it for it’s artistic achievement.

**** – if Star Wars Fan (it has all the elements you are probably looking for.

** 3/4 – if not a Star Wars fan but appreciate the art, talent and an action film in general.

X-Men Apocalypse Trailer

From the trailer it appears that it links those with faith to being those individuals who are extremely naïve and can be easily manipulated not a surprising view from Hollywood elites. I’m also not overly impressed with the special effects shown that appear to cartoonish then in the previous X-Men series.

Big Eyes

big eyes

A brilliant movie of unique character development with the haunting effect that Tim Burton can illustrate better then any current talent in the industry.  The colors are bright and poignant as is every image in this truly remarkable film.

“Future Script”….. REVELATIONS

Posted by Bruce - in Blog, movies - No Comments

I started work on this script (concept below) but haven’t got to far because I realized it would take a great deal of funds for it to produce but I believe it’s an awesome concept. WHAT DO YOU THINK?

running away

Imagine a world where every time you tried to accomplish something that would help you move ahead it would suddenly fall apart at the last moment. Maybe a freak accident would occur with the individual you were supposed to meet or the location you had picked would suddenly flood out.  It’s like someone or something was purposely trying to keep you down.  Imagine then finding out that this was truly the case and that you’re actions could truly save the world or have it destroyed. What if  “Revelations” is truly the story that needs to be told before it’s too late.

Devil’s Due- A great home movie

Devil's Due

ONE OF THE MOST AMAZING SCENES IN THE FILM

Some movies are great to watch on the big screen while others make their greatest appearance on the home screen. A good example of this is “Devil’s Due” which I truly enjoyed at home but would have hated it in the theater.  This movie would have irritated me  on the big screen because some scenes were a bit too long and the jumpy camera can really make you feel like jumping out of your seat but with the ability to fast forward some scenes and go back to others this film worked just right.  The story was a light version of “Rosemary’s Baby with a bit more action then expected.  The acting and story were fine but the special effects were amazing.  In short ‘Devil’s Due” it due your attention at home but not in theater.

Devil’s Due ***  Home  (add 1/2 star if you love special effects)

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes – over-rated

dawn of the planet

I don’t know what I’m missing but this movie was just okay. The script was fine but nothing incredible. The acting was also adequate but no Academy Award nominations here. Special Effects were well done but seeing it in 3D was a total waste of money.  At times the movie moved at a rather slow pace.  I give it a 1/2 star more because of the twist and the  development of Ceaser as a character.  The only reason I can understand the critics rave review is because they might have liked the underlining political message “there is good and bad in all types”.
