Jewish Pass Card

Posted by Bruce - in basic judaism, Blog, Faith - No Comments

Legal fiction

Some Jewish laws are too difficult to fulfill so Rabbi’s have found a “Jewish Pass Card” called Legal Fiction to lessen or even nullify such laws. For example it says in the bible you shouldn’t take interest when making a loan so the “Rabbi’s” have found a device to call it an investment and the interest a return. Utilizing this device many of us “Rabbi’s in training” (at least in our mind) have taken these steps in our life. For example I eat non-kosher meats but make sure that I don’t eat the parts where blood would be taken (thou shall not eat blood) and order all my meats well done to drain them of this source.  I believe since “Kosher laws” aren’t specifically defined in the bible I could use my “Jewish Pass Card” and G-D will accept it on my part.  I also have introduced more Kosher food to my house and try to support Kosher restaurants on a regular basis just in case my card isn’t always accepted.

36 Save the world – “Lamed Vovnik”

Lamed Vovnik

At any given time it is said there are 36 holy people save the world from utter destruction but I say it’s 35 1/2 and 7 billion others. For it takes those  36 people to put us on the right path but the efforts of most of us add to the final number especially when the 36 person isn’t as perfect as he/she is expected to be. The truth is even the most holy person is still a person and falls from grace every once in awhile so let’s lift this individual up with our good deeds so we can add to that final number that saves the world.

Spoiled

Cow

Unless you were born a cow in a slaughterhouse you’re spoiled and even then you’re doing much better then that veal or housefly on it’s back. For we are all born to privilege in someway and therefore it’s not what we are given that counts but what we do with it that truly matters. For some reason G-D has chosen our starting spot yet knows the finish line he expects us to achieve. How many lives have we touched or hugged?   Donald Trump might have a few more dollars then me (okay more then a few) and was born into a real estate family but he was able to turn it into an empire while others with similar starting points didn’t achieve as much.  We also never know what other obstacles a person might face to achieve one’s goals (mental, physical, cultural, societal etc) so let’s try to judge their end result instead leave that to G-D.  Back to our cow it is better to be a cow born in New Delhi, India then in Springdale, Arkansaw but you don’t taste as good.

Answered Prayers?

Answered Prayers

Why does G-D appear to answer the prayers of some but turn a cold shoulder to others? I don’t believe this one blog piece will fully answer such a question but will open up a further discussion. For many “good people” appear to have their prayers unanswered while those who are close to the other side appear to have an open path to their request. I believe G-D is the best accountant because not only does he add our good and bad deeds together in making such a decision but also takes into account what we’ve been given or taken away along the route.  Sometimes it might appear that an individual has it all made in the shade but we have never walked in the inner works of such a shade and experienced the eternal conflicts that are occurring there. While others appear downtrodden but have an inner peace and happiness that even the wealthiest and most powerful envy. Furthermore who knows if this is the only time we’ve walked this path before without shoes or if we’re bound to walk it again but this time in “Jordan’s”.

The Birth

Baby Born

While many of my Christian friends are celebrating the birth of Jesus I started reading the Torah portion on the birth of the leader that preceded this period, Moses and found many very interesting similarities. Here are just a few of those similarities (below) that I hope will enlighten your day.

(1) Both births were hidden for fear of the outside world.

(2) Leaders from the world visited these children when they were in their infancy.

(3) They were both born near animals that could have hurt them.

(4) The society at the time tried to kill them before their actual birth.

Crystal Ball

I’m told that we are not to seek our fortune through others yet my forefather’s had many such predictions that they told to others.  Jacob told his son’s where their future lied on his death bed that extended many generations and prophesy is important part of the faith as well.  So today who can we trust to tell our future and should we seek their advise? I believe the source is key, for example if someone’s offer your future only if money is exchanged the future might appear bleak until the next payment is made. It appears  G-D has chosen individuals who through many good deeds (mitzvah’s) have or will be able to reveal such truth but only bits and pieces that sometimes come in code. Therefore listen to the wise sage for you never know when a word of your future or even your future great grandchildren might be revealed in a way that a future generation will only truly understand.

Why Faith and/or why Basic Judaism

lost in dark 2.3

If you’re preaching Christianity, Traditional Judaism or Islamic (except extreme fundamental) that is great! Yet for too many in todays world these paths appear to dark for them to walk through. They reach out for a faith that has a path that they can walk on to whether it be more bumpy or longer at certain intervals is not there concern as long as they have something to truly hold  a long the path they are satisfied.  Basic Judaism might be one more path for them to hold on to because no matter what path they finally go to they should continue to walk with it. Faith is needed by all for the following reasons.

PURPOSE- We as individuals must find a higher purpose to our existence whether it be in the here and now or at a place in time well into a new lifetime.

FREEDOM-  Faith gives the individual the freedom to do what is right and/or different even if everyone around you appears to be doing the opposite. For this is only place and time in the journey to deal with.

EXCUSE-  With faith you no longer have to stand alone with the principles you hold dear but have G-D in your corner.

STRENGTH- Battles can be fought whether be of the mind, body or soul when you believe your words and emotions are being listened to by a higher authority.

DOGMA- Having certain rules and values fixed builds character that you and the world around you will appreciate it especially when others let them down.

WHO YOU ARE- Knowing that G-D created you as is means that you can proud no matter what it appears others are saying.

SOCIETY-  People of faith understand that they are not meant just to serve themselves but that we are all connected because the creator invented us all.

BETTER- We must continue to strive to be a better person for our time is short and can be extended by the good deeds and character we become.

FORGIVENESS- Those of faith understand that G-D is the final judge and although we never forget we must always we be willing to open a hand to those who seek forgiveness through words or action.

REDEMPTIONS- As long as we can breathe and think we can seek redemptions from our mistakes/sins. The path might be much more difficult but a path will be revealed even if it’s not in a future life.

JUSTICE- We must seek justice but understand even if this world won’t see it done it will occur because G-D who is all good and powerful will see that it occurs at a place in time of the Lord’s time.

Bad Choices

Bad Choices

A bad choice doesn’t have to lead to a dead end but just a longer path.  The road might be a bit more bumpier then if we went on the right course but in the end if we start making better choices we can still get there. Joseph’s brother’s sold him into slavery and claimed to his father that a wild beast took his life. This lead to despair for the entire family especially their father Jacob and might have led to years of famine but in the end G-D lead the family to a path of redemption peace and prosperity in a way no one would have imagined.  Many might believe that our poor decisions have put an end to our trail but remember G-D might have other paths that with the right decision open new doors of hope and happiness.

You’re Invited

Invited

You’re invited this Saturday at 10 AM to hear the one story that has had the greatest impact of my life.  I know 10 AM is early but they’ll be some food and beverages that will make it worth your trip plus insight (I hope) to a story that has many colors to it.  This is the story of Joseph and for those who can’t make it let me touch on some of the fine points (below) that I will be bringing up as I give the Diva Torah (Sermon) this Shabbos.

(1) ALONE- In today’s times it appears more difficult then ever to stand and practice one’s faith but can you imagine Joseph who stood alone while those all around him believed in idolatry?

(2) FAITH- We are all tested through difficult economic times, physical ailments or even death of loved ones. Yet Joseph was sold by his own brothers to be a slave and then when things appeared to be on the uptick he is sent to prison for a crime he didn’t commit. Even then  he never lost faith in G-D and knew that all his powers would only come from thee.  This is truly the Rocky story for every generation.

(3) UNITY-  The people as diverse as they were called to come together to prepare for a great famine and by so doing saved the world. Today we must come together to defeat an evil that we all face (Christian, Jew,  Muslim, Republican, Democrat etc) Islamic Extremist that are bent on killing all that we hold dear.

Your invite  -Congregation Shaarey Israel -18 Montebello Road, Montebello NY- Saturday 12/05/15- 10 AM

praying 2

How do you know that your simple prayer is the balancing act in favor of good vs evil?  Those few words that come from your heart and soul maybe just what the world needs to have G-D give that policeman new insight to prevent a terrorist attack in Times Square, or maybe give the extra beat of a heart that gets a young child out of difficult surgery who knows what your prayer does?  I guess in the end when we meet our maker we will finally have that answer but in between I’ll say a few prayers to try to  keep that day away.
