What a wonderful experience to let out all your thoughts/feelings and not worry that you’re a burden to that other individual. In the “real world” sometimes you can feel your burdening friends and families with their own thoughts and problems when they have their own life. A therapist on the other hand is being paid from your hard earned monies to listen to those thoughts and therefore they can’t be burdened as such. They can offer their own opinions but only after they’ve carefully listened to yours. Therapist also are paid to be empathetic to your feelings and problems while in the real world many people might downplay those thoughts or don’t have the time or patience to truly care. Therefore therapy doesn’t just help those that are having difficulties but those who want to be heard.
Yet when government intrudes into this very important relationship the opportunity for a real free discussion that clears the air becomes clouded. There needs to be a very thick line between “the fear of the public” and the right to confidentiality. Only when truly necessary should that line be crossed and we must trust the professional therapist not the politicians to determine when such a line needs to be crossed.
