“Respect” we gain some of it by just existing but other parts of the puzzle are earned. The question then remains is it something from a textbook or from the streets? Does “one” earn extra respect for the cloth they wear or the clothes they’ve had to shed? Is it based on the knowledge one gains from a degree soon forgotten or one learned over a lifetime? I guess it’s a balancing act in which no side fully gets exactly what they want or even deserve.
