The last place one can legally be sexist, racist etc in hiring is Hollywood. For when a white male character is called for no matter how better qualified the African American might be the white male will be picked and vice versa. This of course is true with gender as well as race for when a script calls for a certain type then the Director usually follows such advise. No other industry in America has the leeway and in many cases we understand why they have this exception. For how many African slaves were white and how many Jewish Concentration victims were Chinese? Yet I’m wondering whether a bit more openness could be called into this industry even if what they do still passes the legal test. In today’s times many a great actor can help us relate to a character even if their initially appearance isn’t what one might have expected. They might even broaden what we would expect of different people in society as a whole if it was more based on talent then scripted black and white issues.
FOOTNOTE- I would have put Broadway in the same category but after Hamilton it proved the audience is deeper then any color barrier.
