Before you draw any conclusions either way you must determine what kind of success that one is aspiring to achieve. If it’s success in discovery then the finger goes to the smart person. Yet if it’s to keep and get the attention of those who can move you up the ladder looks can really help unless the one with the ladder is blind. It may not be fair but people will act kinder and open more doors for those who smile just the right way and be less likely to close the door when those same people make mistakes. Brains can get you to the top but you always must be thinking to stay there while looks will give you a hell of a lot to actually learn how to think in the 1st place.
