how we learn

I’m currently reading “How We Learn” by Benedict Carey and feel it’s important that I review some of the facts I’ve taken in before I forget. I will add to this list or a periodic basis or as I have a moment to think about these key points. This might not be the most titillating book but extremely important for those who want to be as productive with their “learning times“.  Here are a few hints that might be helpful.

(1) DIFFERENT ROOMS- It can be very helpful not to study in the same room but absorb the knowledge in different locations with different stimuli around you.

(2) MAGIC PEN- That crazy unusual pen or item could be helpful to have when you’re studying  and when you take a test.

(3) BREAKS- Breaks, that are quite different from your study time (T.V, Video Games etc) can actually be helpful when you have a brain freeze

(4) REPETITION- We have all been told that repetition is a key part of learning but it is important to diversify how that repetition is given so that the mind can absorb it.

(5) OVER TIME- Cramming might be best if you’ve forgotten to study but to learn means to absorb bits of pieces over time.

(6) NAPS- Taking a nap during the day between studying can help you retain knowledge.

(7) CUE CARDS- Even before you learn the facts Cue Cards with pictures can help your mind find patterns that will help you identify differences within a subgroup. Of course you will have to have the right answers on the back.
