Our words were silenced but not our sniffs. The government might try to control what we said so our communication occurred through other orifices in our body. We learned that two sniffs meant “no” and that one large sniff for 5 seconds meant “yes”. Yet that was the beginning of our underground language having a phone ring three times rather than four meant something totally different depending on the communication channel you were trying to get through but the sniff was always true. Communication appeared to be shut down but our thoughts continued to run free as the sniff gave us the freedom to be ourselves again.
