Mere hours before the fiery car crash that took his life, journalist Michael  Hastings sent an email to friends and colleagues urging them to get legal  counsel if they were approached by federal authorities.

“Hey [redacted] the Feds are interviewing my ‘close friends and  associates,'”read the message dated June 17th at 12:56 pm from Hastings to  editors at  the website BuzzFeed, where he worked.

“Perhaps if the authorities arrive ‘BuzzFeed GQ’, er HQ, may be wise to  immediately request legal counsel before any conversations or interviews about  our news-gathering practices or related journalism  issues.”

Faith and Freedom

Posted by Bruce - in Blog, Faith - Comments Off on Faith and Freedom

Freedom     I believe true faith makes you free. Many people belief the opposite because of the restrictions that a faithful life can bring on a person but I believe they are looking in the wrong direction  A person of faith doesn’t have to worry about keeping up with the Jones’s, Rabinowitz’s and or Smith’s instead they only worrying about what G-D truly expects of them. This enables them to seek a profession that provides for their family and faith but not trample on their soul. This also enables them to say what they belief instead of worrying about how the masses might perceive those beliefs. They also are free of the pain and worry that those in the secular community live with because they see a higher calling to this life and the afterlife. Those of faith are not without challenges but the freedom that faith gives them enables them to see another path that others are blind to.

Loudest voice in a room- Bully Pulpit

Posted by Bruce - in Blog, Political - Comments Off on Loudest voice in a room- Bully Pulpit

We all sometimes raise our voice a bit too loud but there is usually is one person who does it habitually. This person uses their voice to intimidate others into doing as they say. They are truly using a “bully pulpit” technique. Those who are timid or just “want peace” will find ways to accommodate the bully even when they are clearly wrong and/or their opinion is opposite the majority.

The best way to deal with these individuals is through speaking softly and carrying a big rifle (stick was taken). Seriously though, when you are extremely courteous to those individuals but not intimidated by their rants those around you will become stronger as well. For example you can say ” I appreciate your passion but I believe it’s important that other voices are heard and therefore I hope you’ll listen to mine.”  In the end the crowd might still give into the bully but at least you will be free from being another one of their victims.

Doctors report major progress toward  ‘artificial pancreas’

Doctors are reporting a major step toward an “artificial pancreas,” a device  that would constantly monitor blood sugar in people with diabetes and  automatically supply insulin as needed.

A key component of such a system — an insulin pump programmed to shut down  if blood-sugar dips too low while people are sleeping — worked as intended in a  three-month study of 247 patients.

This “smart pump,” made by Minneapolis-based Medtronic Inc., is already sold  in Europe, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is reviewing it now.  Whether it also can be programmed to mimic a real pancreas and constantly adjust  insulin based on continuous readings from a blood-sugar monitor requires more  testing, but doctors say the new study suggests that’s a realistic  goal.

Revenge maybe sour!

Posted by Bruce - in Blog, Faith - Comments Off on Revenge maybe sour!

We have often heard the term “Revenge is sweet” but I beg to differ, I believe it is sour.  Their was a time in my life when I sought revenge on those that hurt or betrayed me. One individual committed such a horrible act toward me that I became consumed with thoughts of revenge and hatred. During this time period it was hard for me to show warmth to those who I cared about.  It was also extremely hard for me to take a moment to think about the good in my life.    Then I stopped!

I instead taught myself to hate what this man did but not hate the individual.  I prayed to G-D not for revenge but that this man would learn the errors of his ways and that this in turn would make his life as well as mine better.   The anger and hate were gone and I felt a stronger love to those around me and yes the roses smelt a bit sweeter then ever before. I can never fully understand the pain and hurt that others bear because of the cruelty betrayed on them. All I can say is learning to hate the act but not the individual gives you a freedom that can’t be measured.

Regulation hurt the small and weak much more then the powerful and elite.

Posted by Bruce - in Blog, Political - Comments Off on Regulation hurt the small and weak much more then the powerful and elite.

When government adds new regulations the burden of absorbing these acts is  put on the backs of those who can least afford them. Large corporation can hire lawyers to find loopholes that enable them to escape the pain these regulations cause, or have the ability to absorb the cost regulations bring on them. Mom and pop businesses find it much more difficult to absorb those costs. While large companies can shift the cost of new regulations on the consumer by raising prices, it’s more difficult for a small business with less products and/or less sales to do the same.

It is not only business that suffer from over-regulation but those who are the vulnerable in our society.  Large companies raise prices on items to cover the cost that new regulations bring to their businesses; which makes it more difficult for those who are struggling to buy the products they need for themselves and their families. New regulations also bring new costs to businesses, so that these businesses will be less likely to hire new employees and/or increase salaries of those that work for them. This burden is most felt by those who are the poorest among us because many of them are looking for positions and also can barely afford to survive with the monies they currently are receiving.

The Torah/Bible’s way to help the poor.

Posted by Bruce - in Blog, Faith - Comments Off on The Torah/Bible’s way to help the poor.

The truly poor among us would be taken care of without the need of the government if only people followed G-D’s law “You shall surely open your hand to your brother, to your poor and to your  destitute in your land.” G-D commands us to help the poor but only with a “loan”. I believe this means that we are to help others in dire situations but that they should make every attempt to pay us back either financially or through their works. Thus if the individual had no true intention of paying us back then they should not ask for help. This way the poor have to find an outlet to get themselves out of this situation.helping poor

World War Z- Quick review- Intense

*** 1/2 Intense film that moved quickly ! Poor casting for Brad PItt’s wife.  A few scenes that made you jump! The storyline was fine except the ending was predictable. The film deserved 3 stars overall but I add 1/2 star for the unique positive portrayal of Israel.
